Personal tax returns and Self Assessment.
Nobody looks forward to their tax return. A form you're not sure you need to fill in, a tax code that doesn't look right, a letter from HMRC that raises more questions than it answers: it all sits at the bottom of the list until the deadline's looming. This is where Newton & Co come in. We'll prepare and file your Self Assessment tax return, sort out your tax code if HMRC have got it wrong, and tell you plainly what you owe and when.
Self Assessment, sorted. By someone who'll explain it.
If you're self-employed, have income outside your main job, or HMRC have just asked you to file a return, we'll take it from there. Send us what you've got and we'll turn it into a return that's filed correctly and on time.
It's not just the annual return, either. If your tax code's wrong, or you've had a PAYE letter that doesn't add up, we'll deal with HMRC directly so you don't have to sit on hold.
What we handle for you.
Everything below is included, whether it's a one-off return or something we look after every year.
You send us what you've got, we take it from there and file on time.
If HMRC have got it wrong, we'll deal with them, not you.
No guessing, and no surprises near the deadline.
HMRC's move to digital records and quarterly updates, phased in from April 2026 by income level, and we'll get you ready in good time.
Not a call centre, and not a different face every time.
Ready for whenever HMRC ask, so there's no scramble at deadline time.
Personal tax at Newton & Co. Sorted by a director who knows your file.
A wrong tax code or a missed deadline is easy to let slide until it's a penalty. Natalie Basilisco ATT, CTA, our director for individuals, sole traders and landlords, looks after personal tax returns here, so you're always speaking to someone who actually knows your file.

Do I need to file a Self Assessment tax return?
It depends on your circumstances: self-employment, rental income, higher earnings, or a letter from HMRC asking for one are the usual triggers. If you're not sure, get in touch and we'll tell you plainly.
What if I've never done a tax return before?
That's fine. We'll register you if you need it, explain what we need from you, and take it from there.
My tax code doesn't look right. Can you sort it?
Yes. We'll check it against what HMRC hold and get it corrected directly with them.
What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, and does it affect me?
It's HMRC's move to digital record-keeping and quarterly updates, instead of one tax return a year. It's being phased in by income: over £50,000 from 6 April 2026, over £30,000 from 6 April 2027, and over £20,000 from 6 April 2028. We'll let you know when it applies to you and get everything set up in good time.
When's the deadline?
31 January each year for filing online and paying what's owed, for the tax year that ended the previous 5 April. We'll have your figures ready well before that.
How much does it cost?
It depends on how simple or complicated your return is. We'll be straight with you about what's involved, and what it'll cost, before anything starts.
