Making Tax Digital.
You didn't start a business to learn what Making Tax Digital means. It's HMRC's push to move tax records online, and it's already compulsory for VAT, with Income Tax following for more people every year. At Newton & Co, we get you set up on the right software and keep you compliant, so you don't have to keep track of the rules yourself.
New rules, quietly handled. You won't need to read the small print.
Making Tax Digital (MTD) means keeping your tax records digitally and sending HMRC regular updates instead of one big return. It's already the law for VAT, and it's coming for Income Tax too, starting with people earning over £50,000 from self-employment or property from April 2026.
We work out whether and when it applies to you, get you set up on software that does the job properly, and handle the filing so the deadlines are never something you're chasing.
What we handle for you.
Everything below is included, so MTD becomes something that just happens in the background.
We track the thresholds and tell you before you need to act.
Records kept in MTD-compatible software from day one.
Already compulsory for VAT-registered businesses, and already built into how we work.
If you're self-employed or a landlord, we'll tell you which year it starts for you.
No missed deadlines, no last-minute scramble.
The rules keep changing. With Newton & Co, you'll always know where you stand.
HMRC has phased MTD in gradually and the thresholds move as the rules roll out further. You'll deal with a director, we'll explain what's changing in plain English, and we'll tell you well before anything's due to start.

What actually is Making Tax Digital?
It's HMRC's requirement to keep tax records digitally and send updates through compatible software, rather than filling in a paper form once a year. It's already in force for VAT.
Does this affect me if I'm not VAT registered?
It will, if you're self-employed or a landlord. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax starts from 6 April 2026 if your total income from self-employment and property is over £50,000, with more people brought in from April 2027 and April 2028 as the threshold comes down.
I'm already VAT registered, do I need to do anything?
If you're VAT registered, you should already be signed up for MTD for VAT, HMRC moved everyone across automatically. If you're using us for your VAT returns, this is already sorted.
What software do I need?
Anything MTD-compatible, we'll help you choose and get it set up properly. See our software set-up and training page for more on that.
How much does it cost?
It depends on your circumstances and how much support you need to get set up. We'll be straight with you about what's involved, and what it'll cost, before anything starts.
We handle Making Tax Digital for businesses and landlords in Jarrow, South Tyneside, Newcastle and the wider North East, remotely across the UK, and for people living and working overseas.
