Business tax for sole traders and the self-employed.
You started a business. Not an accounts department. Somewhere between quoting jobs and keeping customers happy, registering with HMRC and filing a tax return end up at the bottom of the list, right until the deadline's close. This is where Newton & Co come in. We'll get you registered, prepare and file your return, and tell you plainly what you owe.
Sole trader or self-employed? We'll keep HMRC off your back.
If you're trading as a sole trader, whatever the line of work, we'll handle the tax side: getting you registered if you haven't already, working out your figures each year, and filing your return on time.
You'll always deal with a director who knows your business, and you'll always know what's coming before it's due.
What we handle for you.

You send us your figures, we turn them into a return that's filed on time.
Clear figures, no surprises near the deadline.

Ready for whenever MTD applies to you.
You run the business. Newton & Co will run the numbers.
Sole traders and the self-employed are a big part of what we do at Newton & Co: people who'd rather get on with their trade than sit filling in forms. Natalie Basilisco ATT, CTA looks after sole traders here, so you're always dealing with someone who knows your figures.

Can't see yours? and we'll happily talk it through.
Do I need to register as self-employed?
Yes, if you're trading as a sole trader you need to tell HMRC. You must register by 5 October following the end of the tax year you started trading in, or you risk a penalty. We'll handle it for you.
When's my tax return due?
31 January each year, for filing online and paying what's owed, covering the tax year that ended the previous 5 April. We'll have your figures ready well before that.
What if I've never filed a tax return before?
That's fine. We'll register you, explain what we need, and take it from there.
What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, and does it affect me?
It's HMRC's move to digital record-keeping and quarterly updates, instead of one tax return a year. It's being phased in by income: over £50,000 from 6 April 2026, over £30,000 from 6 April 2027, and over £20,000 from 6 April 2028. We'll let you know when it applies to you and get everything set up in good time.
How much does it cost?
It depends on how your business is set up and how much bookkeeping's involved. We'll be straight with you about what's involved, and what it'll cost, before anything starts.
We look after sole traders and self-employed people across Jarrow, South Tyneside, Newcastle and the wider North East, remotely across the UK, and for people trading while living overseas.
